Singapore's leading campaign for positive environmental action

Eco Action Day is an annual nationwide campaign in Singapore encouraging awareness and action for the environment, culminating in the celebration of World Environment Day on June 5th. Over the years, it has grown to be an established platform for organisations and individuals to pledge environmental actions.

The theme: Green the Red Dot, Join the Movement calls on participants to join the national campaign to green Singapore - also known as the "Little Red Dot" - by committing to actions that will reduce energy and resource consumption, thereby minimizing carbon emissions.

As a small island state, Singapore is faces similar challenges in protecting itself in the wake of growing risks and vulnerabilities as a result of climate change such as rising sea levels, food and water scarcity and extreme weather patterns.

So let's take collective action to reduce the environmental impact of our actions at work and at home, and make Singapore more resilient in the face of climate change!

How It Started

Ricoh signboards and advertising towers are turned off on 5 June.

The Ricoh group first mooted the idea of commemorating World Environment Day in 2006, and decided to do so by engaging their employees, customers, corporate neighbours and government partners to take action to reduce their impact on the environment on that day.

The first Eco Action Day in Singapore took place on 5 June 2007, and was carried out in collaboration with the Singapore Environment Council (SEC). Eighteen organisations registered for the first ever Eco Action Day, including ten multinational organisations, a hospital and a school.

Through the proactive participation of these organisations, the first Eco Action Day catalysed nearly 6,000 kWh of energy savings!

More than 700 organisations have participated in Eco Action Day since 2007.

Mission and Objectives

In past campaigns, Eco Action Day has focused on the theme of reducing energy use in the office environment. In 2007, Ricoh collaborated with the Singapore Environment Council (SEC) in the first nationwide energy-saving campaign targeting the office sector. Every Eco Action Day, organisations and individuals are urged to make pledges to cut their energy usage such as switching off lights and raising the temperature of air-conditioning systems.

Given the long operating hours of offices, implementing these green practices could have a significant impact on reducing resource consumption in Singapore. While the campaign calls on participants to carry out these pledges all year round, Ricoh also tracks the energy savings and carbon reductions achieved by specific pledges on World Environment Day each year.
